“It is deep January. The sky is hard. The stalks are firmly rooted in ice.”
There seemed to be several common discussions on Facebook this week, those who were getting over the flu, or those who had the flu and felt like they couldn’t get through they day feeling so miserable. Flu symptoms vary from person to person but generally speaking expect high fever, achy joints, headache, sore throat and a dry cough.
Did you get a flu shot this year? According to the Denver Post, “Statewide, flu has sent 674 people to hospitalization this season, in 36 counties.” Scary numbers since flu activity will continue throughout the winter and can continue into early spring. How to prevent catching the influenza virus? Immunization is strongly suggested for everyone who is at least six months of age says the Center for Disease Control…and it’s not too late to get a vaccine.
Other ways to possibly ward off the flu virus common advice includes washing your hands frequently with antibacterial soap and concentrating on boosting your immune system by taking extra Vitamin C and adding more good healthy foods to your daily diet including Greek yogurt and blueberries! I recently read that a sauna twice a week can also help but that seems a bit impractical for most people unless you have a sauna in your home or frequent a gym enough to take advantage of this benefit.
Can you still get the flu after being vaccinated? Yes, but read the reasons why…overall you are much more likely not to get the flu after being vaccinated but still many Americans resist the vaccine believing the myth that getting the vaccine will result in the flu.
